Camarones a la Diablo | Fresh Fish | Homemade Tacos |
Located at the south entrance to Middletown and just past the large Calpine Geothermal information center on a private access road is the new La Parrilla restaurant and catina with indoor and outdoor dining areas. Classy and festive is a way to describe the decor of this cantina operated by the enthusiastic De La Torre family.
The menu includes a selection of Sopesitos (mini corn cakes with beans, onion, lettuce, queso fresco, salsa & sour cream, Taquitos Dorados, tostaditas, queso fundido (traditional cheese fondue with Chorizo, choice of corn or flour tortillas with a side of Pico de gallo and black beans, Mexico City style tacos, tortas (warm Mexican sandwiches), Pambazo, burritos, quesadillas de la casa, queso carne, alambres, enchiladas, molcajete (serves 2 / $30), chili verde plate, Del Sur de Mixico and Del Mar (seafood entrees) including hot and spicy camarones a la Diablo ($16). There is also a kids menu, beverages, salads, nachos and desserts incuding vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. All entrees are prepared to order and include chips with homemade salso.
The atmosphere is cozy and festive with multi colored earth tones and a new landscaped outdoors dining area. Middletown seniors and senioritas surrender to bottled Mexican beer with key lime wedges. At night a rich tapestry of stars is overhead and the occassional howl of a coyote can be heard in the distance. This is a big change for the De La Torre family who came from Mexico City with 25 million people to tiny Middletown's 1,000 person population.
